CGC-certified Superman #1 Soaring in Heritage Auctions Sale

The first issue of Superman has already reached six figures in a Heritage Auctions sale scheduled for November 16-19.

With several days remaining in Heritage Auctions’ Comics and Comic Art Signature Auction on November 16-19, 2023, a first issue of Superman that is graded by Certified Guaranty Company® (CGC®) has already reached six figures. As of November 13, bidding for the Superman #1 graded CGC 3.0 (lot 91027) was at $175,000.

Superman, one of the most legendary superheroes, played a pivotal role in the birth of an entire industry when he made his debut in Action Comics #1 in 1938. This marked the emergence of a new kind of protagonist, reminiscent of ancient mythology, and spurred the creation of numerous heroes who dominated the comic book scene during World War II. Following Superman's introduction, the sales of Action Comics skyrocketed with each subsequent issue.

Recognizing the character's immense popularity, DC decided to grant Superman his own dedicated title, a groundbreaking move in the nascent comics industry. The summer of 1939 saw the release of Superman #1, which promptly sold out, underscoring the undeniable allure and influence of the superhero.

There are only 176 examples of Superman #1 in the CGC Census. In January 2022, a CGC 8.0 example became the most expensive comic book of all time when it was sold for $5.3 million in a private sale.
