Team CGC Trading Cards Made Day Two in the Pokémon Vancouver Regional Championships!

Posted on 21/03/2023

Caleb Gedemer placed 20th in the tournament.

Team CGC Trading Cards successfully made another day two placing this competitive season, this time at the Pokémon Vancouver Regional Championships on March 10-12, with a smaller attendance of 523 Master-level competitors.

Representing Team CGC Trading Cards, Caleb Gedemer placed 20th (9/4/1) and Azul Garcia Griego (5/4/0) ended the tournament on day one. Daniel Altavilla and Kidd Starck were unable to attend the event, but we look forward to cheering them on in Charlotte!

After utilizing the Lost Box deck format with minor variations for months, the team decided to make a major change to their gameplay. Since the release of the Silver Tempest set, Lugia VSTAR has been one of the most popular competitive decks and the team implemented it at Vancouver. This deck composition employs several V cards to support the Lugia VSTAR, including Lugia V, Lumineon V and Stoutland V, while also featuring a card familiar to their Lost Box design: Archeops.

When asked for comment, Caleb had this to say: “After Knoxville went down as the team’s poorest performance of the year, confidences and strategies needed to be reassessed. Still fresh off Azul’s epic OCIC win, the team refused to let this bump in the road get them down. However, with the metagame at a standstill and Lost Box looking shaky, the players finally turned to none other than Lugia VSTAR.

“This wasn’t the most linear decision after nearly 10 events of doing the exact opposite; it was more of a refresh or reboot after all that Lost Zone gameplay. As a solid fallback with strength that precludes argument, the team got a chance to reassess their strategy moving forward, while continuing to brew something up for the next event.”

Team CGC Trading Cards was assembled by Danny Oesterreich in 2022, and is comprised of seasoned players Daniel Altavilla, Azul Garcia Griego, Caleb Gedemer and Kidd Starck. The team will compete next at the Charlotte Regional Championships, at the Charlotte Convention Center, in Charlotte, North Carolina on March 24-26.
