CGC Trading Cards Registry Featured Set: Snorlax – Main Set

Sometimes, collectors find the most enjoyment in collecting cards of a specific type, rather than collecting an entire set. This month’s featured set is a great example: the Snorlax – Main Set by SnorlaxCollective is a set full of Snorlax cards and promos from the Pokémon TCG! (Check out the Q&A with the set owner below.)

Snorlax is one of the original 151 Pokémon introduced in Pokémon Red Version and Pokémon Blue Version for the Game Boy. Designed by Ken Sugimori, it is the heaviest of the original 151 — most likely due to its eating habits! The game’s Pokédex describes Snorlax as a “lazy Pokémon that gets continually fatter by sticking to a cycle of eating and sleeping.” Snorlax eats any type of food, including things that have gone moldy or fallen on the ground.

Interestingly, Snorlax was inspired by one of Pokémon’s long-time programmers at GAME FREAK: Koji Nishino. Besides his larger body weight, Nishino would eat food that had gone moldy without breaking a sweat. Snorlax’s Japanese name, Kabigon, was derived from a nickname that the Game Freak staff lovingly gave Nishino after realizing this habit. Don’t worry — Nishino loves Snorlax and thinks of it as one of his favorite Pokémon!

Q&A with the Set Owner, SnorlaxCollective

How did you get into collecting Pokémon cards?

I got into collecting Pokémon cards the first time when I was a kid! I got a Lime Green Game Boy Color with a copy of Pokémon Yellow for Christmas in 1998. Between that, collecting cards and watching the anime, I got pretty hooked on Pokémon. I stayed pretty invested in Pokémon overall till partway through high school but had stopped collecting cards around 2004-2005.

I came back in 2021 with all the hype around card collecting still going full force. I got all my old binders of cards out of storage and started collecting new cards again with the release of the Battle Styles set. Eventually, I looked into getting my best pulls and my favorite childhood cards graded, and that led me to CGC!

When did you decide to start collecting Snorlax cards?

Surprisingly, I never had any Snorlax cards in my childhood collection! I always thought he was a really cool Pokémon that didn't get enough love, and when I saw the golden Snorlax secret rare card in the Chilling Reign set, I knew I had to have one! This led me down the road of exploring vintage Snorlax cards, and then I became obsessed!

Which is your favorite card in the set?

With so many awesome Snorlax cards out there, it really is hard to choose. But if I had to pick, I would have to say the Rocket's Snorlax ex is my favorite! The EX Team Rocket set from 2004 was the last set I remember opening packs of when I was a kid before I stopped collecting.

What other sets are you working on?

One of the other official sets I am working on is my Base Set Unlimited Master Set! My goal is eventually to have all the cards in a CGC 9 or better. The fun in set collecting for me is the hunt for that one card, checking new listings every few days, and the joy when a card you have been after is suddenly there!

Additionally, I am working on an unofficial set that I hope one day CGC makes official. It is the original Jungle Holo Snorlax (11/64) in every edition, including all seven languages and all variations (1st Edition, Unlimited, No Symbol etc.). I’m hoping to have them in the highest grades I can! One of my favorite aspects of CGC is how they are a leader in the grading space for non-English and non-Japanese cards.

How has the CGC Registry helped with your collecting goals?

The CGC Registry has helped me keep track of all the different arts of Snorlax out there and is a great resource for keeping track of all my cards. Recently I sent in a submission of over 40 Snorlax cards that helped me finish off a lot of the cards I was missing, and CGC makes it so easy to add your newly graded cards into sets.

Have you tried the Autobuild Set feature?

CGC Trading Cards is adding new sets to the CGC Trading Cards Registry on a weekly basis! As you explore and build new sets in your Registry, take advantage of the Autobuild feature — a tool that lets you easily add cards already in your inventory to a new set.

To use the Autobuild feature, make sure all cards are added to your inventory. Then create the set you would like to build. Once you have created the set, you can click on “Autobuild Set” to import all the cards from your inventory that belong to that set!
