CSG Certifies High-grade Wilt Chamberlain Card from the Early 1960s

Posted on 02/11/2022

The highly desirable card is from one of basketball’s earliest sets.

The experts at Certified Sports Guaranty® (CSG®) are thrilled to have graded a rare 1961-62 Fleer #8 Wilt Chamberlain card, which earned a stunning CSG 7. This card stands alone among only seven examples in the CSG Population Report as the highest graded by far.

Due to the scarcity of basketball cards at the time, this is considered Chamberlain’s rookie card. Chamberlain actually began his pro career in 1959 with the Warriors, who moved from Philadelphia to San Francisco in 1962. He later played for the Philadelphia 76ers and Los Angeles Lakers, before retiring in 1973. He was an NBA All Star 13 times and was part of two championship teams.

He remains the only NBA player to score 4,000 points in a season and his record of 100 points in a game in March 1962 is widely considered unbreakable. He led the NBA in scoring seven years in a row and won four MVP awards. In 1978, his first year of eligibility, Chamberlain was elected to the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.
